EAST GREENSBORO,
N.C. (March 2, 2021) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical
State University’s annual tribute to small-scale agriculture will
begin March 21 and will feature educational programs, panel
discussions, and the unveiling of a new Small Farmer of the Year.
All events will be held virtually, and farmers and interested
members of the public can sign up free of charge at the Small
Farms Week registration webpage.
Small Farms Week was launched in 1987 by Cooperative Extension at
N.C. A&T as a way to connect with small-scale farmers –
including minority farmers and those in limited-resource
communities – and ensure they receive the latest research-based
information on farming techniques, new tools and technologies. It
also gives the public a chance to meet their agricultural neighbors
and learn about farm operations and food production.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “35 Years: Resilience.
Strength. Diversity.”
“Our small farmers have to be strong and resilient, even in the best
of times,” said Rosalind Dale, Ed.D., Extension
administrator at N.C. A&T and associate dean in the College of
Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). “The last year has
required extra resourcefulness because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Small Farms Week gives our farmers a needed chance to take a breath,
educate themselves, and take advantage of all the resources
Cooperative Extension has to offer.”
A virtual kickoff event for Small Farms Week 2021 will take
place Friday, March 19, in Avery County, the location of Trosly Farm,
owned by Amos and Kaci Nidiffer, the 2020 Small Farmers of the Year.
Events will begin at 9 a.m. and will include a profile of
agriculture in Avery County and a discussion of agricultural trends
in the county featuring three local farmers. The kickoff will also
recognize the Nidiffers for their 2020 Small Farmer of the Year
Award.
On Monday, March 22, and Tuesday, March 23, educational events will
focus on the health benefits of community gardening – including
boosting your immune system during the pandemic – plant and
livestock production, farm management, and winter production in high
tunnels. Wednesday, March 24, will start with an educational forum
on marketing and agribusiness followed by an update on small farms
initiatives by staff with Cooperative Extension and the CAES.
Wednesday will also feature one of the highlights of Small Farms
Week: the virtual Small Farmers’ Appreciation Program, with a
keynote address by Jimmy Gentry, president of the North Carolina
Grange, and the announcement of the 2021 Small Farmer of the Year.
“The Small Farmer of the Year Award puts a face on farming and
introduces our communities to the people behind the farming
operations they depend on,” said Dale. “These are people who work
year-round without any recognition, so it is a pleasure to learn
about their work and thank them for their efforts.”
Small Farms Week events will conclude Thursday, March 25, with a
panel discussion among NC A&T students on career opportunities in
agriculture.

Farms Week webpage.

The MEAC Salutes its Women Leaders

NORFOLK, Va., March 8, 2021 –
On International Women’s Day (Monday, March 8), the Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference (MEAC) salutes the women in conference
leadership roles to include university presidents, athletics
directors, faculty athletics representatives (FARs) and senior woman
administrators (SWAs).
The MEAC has two women who sit atop of their perspective
universities: Dr. Heidi M. Anderson, President of the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore, and Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, President of
Norfolk State University.
Dr.
Anderson has been president of UMES since September 2018 and has
been an inspiration for women throughout the campus. A pharmacist by
trade, Dr. Anderson is overseeing the construction of a new building
on campus that will house the University’s School of Pharmacy and
Health Professions. Aware of the academic needs of women on campus,
and the importance of role models, Dr. Anderson’s leadership team
includes a female provost in Dr. Nancy Niemi. Since beginning her
tenure in Princess Anne, Dr. Anderson and her administration have
secured multi-million-dollar donations to start a new
Entrepreneurship program, are working on new majors including Sports
Management and Digital Media Studies, a renewed partnership
with Perdue Farms and the largest donation in University history
from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Athletically, it was recently
announced the school would add Women's Beach Volleyball, which will
make UMES the first HBCU to offer the sport at the NCAA level.
Dr.
Adams-Gaston has over three decades of higher education experience
and has been at Norfolk State since June 2019. Since her arrival,
she has been an advocate for the advancement of women and
demonstrated her commitment by hiring the first female AD in Norfolk
State history. Dr. Adams-Gaston has always been a pioneer as she was
the first female African-American Vice President for Student Life at
Ohio State. Under Dr. Adams-Gaston’s leadership, the university has
secured numerous major grants and partnerships, including ties with
Dominion Energy, Diageo North America, IBM, the Southern Company,
USAA, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix and the Sandia National Laboratory.
In December 2020, the university was gifted $40 million —the largest
gift in its 85-year history—by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
Dr. Anderson and Dr. Adams-Gaston both have backgrounds in the
healthcare field with Dr. Anderson’s background in pharmacy while
Dr. Adams-Gaston has a background in counseling.
The MEAC also has two female ADs: Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree of North
Carolina Central and Melody Webb of Norfolk State. Dr. Wicker McCree
has been at NCCU since 1994, starting as a volleyball and softball
coach and later becoming SWA and then AD in 2008. During
her time as AD, McCree has led the reclassification process from
Division II to Division I as a returning member of the MEAC; oversaw
more than $2 million in facility improvements and renovations;
celebrated multiple conference championships and NCAA postseason
appearances; served on several decision-making committees, including
the NCAA Division I Council since 2017; and earned numerous awards,
including 2017-18 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year (FCS)
by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Webb is in her first year at the helm of Norfolk State athletics,
where she served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for
Administration and Senior Woman Administrator for six years prior to
becoming the athletics director. Webb made history by becoming the
first female to hold the role. During her time at Norfolk State, she
helped to provide strategies that drove revenue streams while
increasing brand management and awareness to support the mission and
vision of NSU athletics. Under her leadership, Webb oversaw more
than $2 million in facility upgrades and renovations, including the
installation of video scoreboards, locker room renovations,
replacement of the original court in Joseph G Echols Hall and the
installation of new artificial turf at Dick Price Stadium.
Another key component of the MEAC leadership are the faculty
athletics representatives (FARs) and senior woman administrators (SWAs),
who both make up a key part of the Delegate Assembly, the MEAC's
governing body. The female FARs are Carla Lester (Bethune-Cookman),
Dr, Deborah Johnson (Howard), Dr. Gwendolyn Highsmith-Quick (North
Carolina A&T State) and Dr. Deborah Fortune (North Carolina
Central). and the SWAs are Sandra Booker (Bethune-Cookman), Nichole
Person (Coppin State), Alecia Shields-Gadson (Delaware State), Karai
Lockley (Florida A&M), Amy Olson (Howard), Dr. Kristin Drummond
(Maryland-Easton Shore), Erlease Wagner (Morgan State), Alisha
Tucker (Norfolk State), Shawan Hendrix (North Carolina A&T State),
Kendra Greene (North Carolina Central) and Melissa Dawson (South
Carolina State).
The MEAC salutes all these women as they continue to be trendsetters
in the field of college athletics and lead the MEAC to a bigger and
brighter future.

BALTIMORE (March 8, 2021) – Howard
University women’s volleyball team came up short against rival
Morgan State (MSU), falling to the Lady Bears in five sets (15-25,
25-17, 14-25, 26-24, 10-15) at Hill Field House.
Three Bison reached double-digit kills, led by sophomore middle
blocker Tamar Wells (Apopka,
Fla.) with a team-best 13.
After dropping game one, 15-25, Howard responded with a team-high
.375 hitting percentage and tied the contest at one apiece.
Wells delivered a kill early in set three and gave the Bison a slim
9-8 advantage, but Howard was unable to keep the momentum going. MSU
won game three, 14-25, scoring their next 12-out-of-17 points from
HU hitting errors.
Morgan
State had match-point late in game four, 23-24, but the Bison fought
back and forced a fifth set after consecutive hitting errors from
MSU and a service ace by junior setter Milexa
Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.), 26-24.
MSU took control of the fifth and deciding set after producing a
match-best .562 hitting percentage, scoring nine-out-of-15 points on
kills.
Redshirt junior Marcelle
Butler (Canton, Ga.) and newcomer Jennifer
Bolden (Los Angeles) produced 11 kills apiece while Cardona and
fellow setter Kayla
Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) combined for 44 assists in the loss.

Defensively, freshman Kendall
Smith (Glenview, Ill.) recorded 12 digs in a losing effort.
For MSU (3-1, 2-0 MEAC), Tylar Roberson registered a match-high 14
kills while Jada Bivins added 42 assists in the win.
On March 11-12, Howard continues league play with a pair of matches
against Delaware State (DSU). Thursday (March 11), HU hosts DSU
inside Burr Gymnasium. The next night (March 12), the Lady Hornets
welcome the Bison to Memorial Hall. Both nights are scheduled for 6

N.C. A&T’s Online B.S. in Economics Program Achieves
High Rankings
Jackie Torok |
EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 8, 2021) – Two organizations that rate
college degree programs have ranked the online B.S. program
in
economics from the Willie
A. Deese College of Business and Economics at North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University on
their list of national leaders in online economics programs.
BestColleges placed N.C. A&T at No. 9 in its rankings of the 2021
Best Accredited Online Bachelor’s in Economics Programs,
while Learn.org
placed A&T at No. 13 in its rankings of Best
Online Bachelor’s in Economics Colleges and Universities.
“The
Deese College is very proud to be home to a top ranked online
program that makes undergraduate economics education available to a
broad and diverse audience of learners,” said Kevin L. James, Ph.D.,
Deese College dean.
A&T is the only North Carolina institution and only historically
Black college or university on either list. In fact, it is the only
HBCU in the country with a dedicated online
B.S. in economics.
“Our
program was developed to expand access to students across the state
and country who are interested in completing a high-quality online
degree program that develops the quantitative, analytical, and
problem-solving skills demanded by employers in today’s economy,”
said Scott Simkins, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Economics.
“Students in our online program experience the same rigorous
academic training as those in our campus-based program.
The Deese College’s online B.S. in economics “features a flexible
curriculum that allows students to design a custom economics
specialization or pursue a minor in another field. Unique graduation
requirements include a course in African American history,”
BestColleges said, noting the program’s low cost. “On the
university’s career services website, online degree-seekers can
research job postings and search for internship opportunities. They
can also hone essential interviewing skills through InterviewStream.”
BestColleges used statistical data and a few consistently applied
guiding principles, including academic quality, affordability and
online competency, to compile its top 10 list. Its rankings reflect
the most recent data available from the Integrated Postsecondary
Data System and College Navigator, both hosted by the National
Center for Education Statistics.
Learn. Org offered these highlights of the Deese College’s online
B.S. in economics: “Students in the program can choose to focus
their studies and prepare for a specific career through elective
courses and/or choosing concentrations like marketing, management,
and more. The school’s online program boasts diverse faculty members
and program coordinators to help students stay on track with their
studies.
“The program is also transfer-friendly and provides students with
beneficial access to the program coordinator to ensure they have all
the help they need to plan their course of study as best fits their
goals,” Learn.org said.
Using statistics from the U.S. Department of Education and
information from schools’ websites, Learg.org compiled its top 15
list to identify schools that provide students with distinctive
learning opportunities – such as concentration areas or student
organizations in the field – and rank highly in other academic
success indicators – such as graduation rates and affordable tuition
prices.
“The rankings are a reflection of the hard work and commitment of
faculty in the department to create and implement a high-quality
online program that adds value to the university and provides
valuable economic mobility opportunities for our students,” said
Simkins. “The online economics program at A&T has grown
significantly in the two and a half years since it was approved for
implementation by the UNC System.”
