Virginia Union University's Taylor White, who was the 2015-16 CIAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was chosen to the All-CIAA Volleyball Team in 2016 was honored as Co-Valedictorian of the Class of 2017 at the University's Commencement on Saturday, May 13, in Richmond, Va.
White, who was co-valedictorian with Nhat Hoang Van Le, majored in Teacher Education and carried a perfect 4.0 grade point average while Virginia Union.
White, a senior from LaPlata, Md., made the All-CIAA Volleyball Team after collecting 145 kills and 49 blocks last season.
In 2015-16 she recorded an average of 10.1 rebounds and 9 points per game for the Lady Panthers basketball team. She totaled 11 double-doubles, blocked 26 shots, and was named to the 2016 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Team. In her best contest that season, the 4.0 Dean's List education major grabbed 20 rebounds while scoring 21 points versus Rollins College.
Playing a major role in her community, White served as an essay judge for the Lucille M. Brown Community Youth Bowl, participated in the Teddy Bear Christmas Drive, and has volunteered more than 60 hours at the Overby-Sheppard Elementary School in Richmond. MOBILE, Ala. — For the second consecutive year, Xavier University of Louisiana men's tennis is headed to the semifinals of the NAIA National Championships.
Led by seniors Karan Salwan and Tushar Mandlekar, the Gold Rush won for the second consecutive day with a 5-2 decision against regional rival William Carey.
XULA (13-5), ranked and seeded second nationally, will play third-ranked/seeded Keiser at 9 a.m. Friday at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center. The Gold Rush are 3-0 in the past 15 months against the Seahawks, including victories in the 2016 NAIA quarterfinals and Feb. 17 in the Grizzly Invitational at Lawrenceville, Ga.
Salwan and Mandlekar posted XULA's first victory with an 8-4 decision against Clement Fosse and Hugo Robuchon on the third doubles court. In singles, Salwan made it 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Fosse at No. 3, then Mandlekar made it 4-1 — and avenged a 3-set loss to Paul Chaubaud from last month — with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No 5.
Catalin Fifea clinched on the fourth court with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 victory against Robuchon.
Also winning for XULA were Antoine Richard and Moses Micheal, who beat Chaubaud and Lucien Samitier 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Salwan is 4-0 after two rounds, winning twice in doubles with Mandlekar and twice in singles. Salwan was 4-3 in four tournament rounds in 2016.
Vladyslav Ladygin won twice for William Carey (16-6). Ladygin and Christian Hansson defeated Fifea and Pierre Andrieu 8-1 in 34 minutes on the second doubles court, then Ladygin — a two-time loser to Richard in the regular season at No. 1 singles — scored a 6-4, 6-2 upset against the 2017 ITA NAIA National Rookie of the Year.
The dual match lasted two hours and 39 minutes. The start was delayed 55 minutes because of rain.
XULA won for the eighth time this season against a ranked opponent and the third time in as many attempts against the Crusaders.
This will be the fifth straight year that Alan Green coaches XULA in the NAIA national semifinals. In addition to two straight appearances with the Gold Rush, he coached the XULA women in that round in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Green is the only coach in any sport to lead XULA to an NAIA semifinal.
Keiser advanced with a 5-4 victory against 2016 semifinalist Lindsey Wilson. On the other side of the bracket, Campbellsville defeated Northwestern Ohio 5-4, and three-time defending champion Georgia Gwinnett beat William Woods 5-0. Campbellsville and Georgia Gwinnett also will play at 9 a.m. Friday. The championship will start at 9 a.m. Saturday.

| Kyle Serba May 18, 2017 INDIANAPOLIS – North Carolina Central University redshirt freshman Omega Smalls and the men’s 4x100-meter relay team have qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, starting Thursday, May 25, the NCAA announced Thursday. Smalls, out of North Charleston, South Carolina, achieved a season-best leap of 2.11 meters (6’ 11”) to place second in the men’s high jump at the MEAC Championships, earning a silver medal. That performance ranks 28th among the 48 qualifiers for the NCAA East regional. The men’s high jump event will take place on Saturday, May 27 at 6:00 p.m. The NCCU men’s 4x100m relay squad of Jonathan Williams (Wake Forest, N.C.), Deontae Williams (Tampa, Fla.), Blake Hartsfield (Goldsboro, N.C.) and Isaac Roberts (Greensboro, N.C.) placed second in the college finals of the prestigious Penn Relays with a season-best time of 40.26 seconds, which ranks 23rd of the 24 regional qualifiers. This is the first time an NCCU relay team has qualified for the NCAA regionals since the university reclassified to Division I in the summer of 2011. The men’s 4x100m relay race will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 6:15 p.m. The top 12 finishers in both the men’s high jump and the 4x100m relay will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 7-10. Baseball players honored for classroom success
NORFOLK, Virginia – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced
their Baseball All-Academic honors on Tuesday, and among the 96
student-athletes selected were 11 Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.
Student-athletes who are sophomores, juniors and seniors with a 3.0 or
higher cumulative grade point average are selected, and transfer
students must have been in residence at their current institution for at
least one year.
The 11 Hawks named to the team are junior Isaiah Chambers (Bowie,
Maryland), junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland), sophomore
Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire), junior Tyler Friis (Appleton,
Wisconsin), junior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland), senior Jordan
Martin (Stockbridge, Georgia), junior Chris Melrath (Rising Sun,
Maryland), sophomore Zach Mills (Parksley, Virginia), sophomore Joseph
Nicastro (New Market, Maryland), junior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield,
Virginia), and senior Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland).
“I would like to congratulate our baseball student-athletes who have
maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during this academic
school year,” said Commissioner Dr. Dennis E. Thomas. “In addition to
recognizing the student-athletes' achievements, I also commend the
institutions' academic support staffs, coaches and parents for their
support in the success of these student-athletes both on the field and
in the classroom.”
In addition to the All-Academic Team honors, the Hawks’ baseball team
won the Men’s Team of Scholars award at the annual athletic awards
banquet this past Tuesday. Zach Mills earned the Men’s Scholar-Athlete
of the Year for having the highest individual GPA within the department.

ZACK COOPER NAMED D2CCA ALL-ATLANTIC FIRST TEAM

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) announced on Thursday the D2CCA Atlantic All-Region Baseball honors. Senior Zack Cooper was selected to the First Team All-Region as a utility player/pitcher.
Cooper picks up First Team All-Region honors as a utility player and second D2CCA All-Region honors being selected to the Second Team last season. The Franklinton, N.C. native finished the season with a .326 batting average including a team leading 17 doubles.
On the defensive side of the plate, Cooper tallied 165 putouts and 47 assists. Cooper also produced on the mound with a 5-0 record in 14 appearances tallying three saves in 38.1 innings. Cooper posted a 2.35 ERA with the second most strikeouts (40) on the team.
Cooper has been selected to the All-CIAA Second Team and D2CCA All-Atlantic First Team this season.
